Fishing skill influences the damage you do in sportfishing. Allowing you to catch fish faster, and to catch bigger fish. Plus 2 damage bonus every 1000 Fishing Proficiency on top of the poles base damage. Big damage bonus for each fishing pole requiring higher proficiency
-from gamepedia
Don't need to have any experiences from basic fishing to do sportfishing, as long as you have all requirements (fishing pole, lure and chum). You can go sportfishing in saltwater and freshwater

2. How to Sportfishing
-from gamepedia, added up some more ideas from experience
1. Find a schooling fish area
-Fish flock; you will see bunch of seagulls flying over on that spot, white seagulls in sea, brown seagulls in lake
2. Throw the correct chum into the school of fish
-If you are in a group, only one person need to throw for whole group, apparently only one chum need to sportfishing for everyone in same spot
3. Don't forget to equip your fishing rod
-equip one of your hand in your character
4. Use your sportfishing skill and throw into the school of fish
5. Wait until a fish is on your line
6. Once a fish gets hooked up, he will start having buffs. You have to match the skill to the one he is casting
-This is the most hard part. You have to fight against him till he gets exhausted. It takes pretty long time, so prepare
7. Once the fish gets low health enough, it will get executed
8. Swim out and collect the fish
-This fish is pretty heavy so It comes as trade pack when you pick up, means you have to carry it. Raw boat or Clipper don't have any place to contain that fish so prefer bring bigger ships, otherwise, you have to be back to land to get rid of that fish
9. Take the fish to "Fish Stand" to collect your gold
2.1 When throw fishing line
-different, depends on the size and type of the fish, below info for example of Arowana
-Use 100 Labor Points (Watch out your Labor points, it goes out quick)
-Use 1 lure per throw (If you move, fishing canceled and still waste 1 lure, so don't move, after throw fishing line)
-Gain 5775 XP
-100 Vocation Badges will be acquired (Surely Vocational Badges gain quick to buy more chums and lures)
If you win over the fish
-Gain 288 XP when pick up fish.
3. Where to get your prize
Find "Fish Stand" in your map first. When you come to "Fish Stand", 2 options will be given, "F" or "G"
By pressing "F"
-For cash out, just sell your fish
By pressing "G"
-Craft a fish into a decor item. So you can have a print for that fish, that you can decorate in your house, mostly shop price 1 silver)
